And now, thanks to emerging digital imaging (DI) technology and 360 cameras, more consumers than ever are enjoying this bird’s-eye view for their favorite moments and memories.
Consumer Technology Association (CTA) research projects exponential growth as consumers are quickly embracing the everything-at-once viewpoint 360 cameras provide. CTA expects U.S. unit sales to skyrocket 400 percent from 2015 to 2016 and then double beyond that in 2017. Along the way, innovations in technology and more efficient design will help bring down the average unit price of a 360 camera to $280 this year.
As consumers more frequently rely on their smartphones to take pictures, 360 cameras are among the emerging technologies — along with action cameras — helping to stabilize annual revenues for the digital imaging sector. But a new CTA study shows that a significant gap remains in consumer awareness: 3 percent of consumers surveyed own and use 360 cameras, but 43 percent have never even heard of the devices (no word on how many have heard of the American woodcock).
